The arch bridge over the Sesia River on the road to Doccio, made of reinforced concrete and consisting of 5 spans, connects the municipality of Quarona (VC) to Doccio. After its construction in 1931, the first maintenance and restoration interventions on the reinforced concrete cables, which showed signs of damage, took place in 1967. Subsequently, in 2001, static analyses with load tests were conducted to assess the load capacity, which limited passage to vehicles with a maximum of 18 tons, and consequently, due to the flood of 2020 that affected Valsesia, there was a further restriction to 8 tons. A thorough analysis of the structural condition through geometric surveys with 3D laser scanner equipment and visual inspections conducted by the RiADATTO Studio revealed several defects such as: piers and beams subject to moisture and cracking; beams, crossbeams, and columns with detached concrete cover and corroded reinforcement bars; slab and bracing subject to moisture stains and corrosion of the reinforcements; deterioration and excessive deformations of the steel cables and their distribution plates resting on the arch beams. For this reason, after careful examination, the intervention techniques aimed at ensuring structural restoration and safety included: sealing cracks with polyurethane cement sealant; passivation of exposed reinforcements on all structural elements of the work; anchoring of the reinforcement bars carried out through continuous core drilling; disassembly and replacement of the steel cables and their distribution plates resting on the existing arch beams; installation of new cables and steel key blocks; structural reinforcement for bending of the beams and crossbeams with the application of FRP reinforcement fabrics; structural shear reinforcement of the beams and crossbeams using continuous U-shaped wrapping for the first meters from the support at each end of the different spans; reinforcement of the slab with fiber-reinforced cement mortar; waterproofing with a new road surface.
